NOVATO, Marin County — October 31, 2026. A major rebuilding effort on Novato Boulevard between Diablo Avenue and Grant Avenue is designed to change both the street’s surface and the infrastructure beneath it. The City of Novato is coordinating with the North Marin Water District and Novato Sanitary District so roadway, water and sewer work can proceed together rather than through unrelated excavation schedules.
What residents can expect from the design
The city’s project overview calls for continuous sidewalks on both sides of the corridor, Class II bicycle lanes, reconstructed driveway approaches, landscaping, storm drainage improvements, signals and street lighting. The two utility districts are responsible for related water and sewer work under the coordinated effort.
Those are planned improvements, not a claim that the finished street already exists. The city also identified the need to coordinate with PG&E’s separate underground utility work and pole removal before completing the roadway project.
Why multiple agencies are involved
Water, sewer and road infrastructure occupy different parts of the same corridor. By planning work together, the agencies aim to reduce repeat excavation and shorten disruption compared with carrying out separate full projects. That coordination does not eliminate all traffic delays or guarantee uninterrupted access during construction.
How long might the project last?
The city’s public materials have described an estimated 18–24 months for the multi-agency improvement phase. Earlier project pages contain preliminary start schedules; the final timeline depends on utility work, contractor mobilization and site conditions. Residents should rely on the latest city construction notice for any road closure or detour, not an older estimate.
For property owners and businesses
Residents with driveways along the project corridor should review current access notifications and contact Public Works about property-specific impacts. The city’s Public Works Projects directory provides links to active projects and update subscriptions. Travelers should expect potential staged work but should not assume a specific location is closed unless an official notice or onsite signage confirms it.
