NOVATO, CALIFORNIA — November 5, 2026. The election for Novato Unified School District Governing Board, Trustee Area 4, has an early reported lead of 1,616 votes for Abbey Picus to 711 for Francis Drouillard. No official certification has occurred.
Area 4 is not all of Novato
A trustee-area election covers voters within a particular school district geographical area. Its 2,327 reported candidate selections cannot be described as the entire Novato electorate, and the figures should not be compared directly with city council results that use different territorial boundaries. Residents outside the district or outside Trustee Area 4 may not have received this contest on their ballot.
What voters are selecting
The school board helps determine district budget priorities, facilities, educational programs and oversight of the superintendent. The seat has practical implications for school families, employees and taxpayers. Election results identify the candidate supported in each valid ballot selection; they do not tell readers which of the candidates’ specific policies motivated each voter.
Novato also voted for City Council representatives
California58’s Novato Council coverage reports separate contests in City Council Districts 2 and 4. A person voting in one council district cannot automatically be counted in the school trustee-area election because those districts do not necessarily coincide. Readers should keep both offices, candidates and reporting timestamps distinct.
Ballot-counting process
Marin County is processing eligible late vote-by-mail and provisional ballots and auditing its results. Even when a district has a sizeable early margin, the legal final result belongs to the county’s certified canvass. The county’s official results and update schedule provide the best place to monitor subsequent vote batches. This story retains the November 4 numbers for comparison rather than inventing a new November 5 total.
